Biography
Earning comparisons to Donovan for the sprinkling of blues, jazz, and reggae in his eclectic brand of folk-rock, British singer/ songwriter/ guitarist Martin Stephenson and his backing band the Daintees came out of a small town near Newcastle in the mid-’80s with a distinctively rural, understated, yet warm sound. Stephenson released his debut album, Boat to Bolivia, in 1986; it was followed two years later by the more introspective Gladsome Humour & Blue. (The American CD release of the latter includes the entirety of Boat to Bolivia.) For his third album, 1990’s Salutation Road, Stephenson worked with American producer Pete Anderson, who had also worked with Dwight Yoakam and Michelle Shocked; the result was the most exuberant, rock-oriented record in Stephenson’s catalog. After two albums on Kitchenware during the early ’90s, Stephenson moved to the Demon label in 1995 with two new discs, Sweet Misdemeanour and Yogi in My House.
